Selsey faced a tough young side on Sunday afternoon at the Seal Bay Stadium. The Seals started off strong at the back as Brighton captain, Clarabella Hall was denied by a superb save from Millie Delamont and Charlie Davey produced an impressive clean tackle from behind after Hall travelled through the defence.
It looked as though Brighton were going to score before Beth Kaluma’s brilliant ball met Kayla Ginger who missed the target. This was not the last of big chances missed by the visitors as Lily Dent and Aylissa Mundle linked up well to provide Olivia Johnson with a clear shot at goal before mis-hitting the ball as it went wide.
The Seals had Delamont to thank after a great save from Olivia Johnson’s wide angled effort as well as getting a foot to Kaluma’s attempt before its backspin in the air was caught. Delamont was on top form for the Seals, so it was no surprise when she denied Kaluma again with her quick thinking as she closed down Kaluma who was put off as her effort ended up over the bar.
After many attempts Brighton took the lead in the 24th minute when Brooke Burton’s pass met Hall in front of Delamont who struck the ball in the bottom left corner after a cool little stutter, she could not miss this time.
Selsey responded with an impressive solo goal from Hamilton 7 minutes later after she closed down Issy Payne and battled well to nick the ball before she ran towards Comfort Crowbar as the Brighton defence could not track her down and Hamilton remained composed with a great strike past Crowbar to get the home fans off their seats.
Unfortunate for Hamilton soon after her moment of magic, she went down with an injury which forced her off for Olivia Peters.
Davey produced another fearless challenge to deny the visitors a chance of attack after Johnson’s ball found Kaluma in a dangerous position.
The visitors took the lead again when Lily Dent’s throw in to Johnson allowed a clean strike across goal into the left corner before the ball went in from the inside of the left post in the 42nd minute.
Delamont’s decisive quick thinking rescued Selsey as she came off her line to apply pressure and deny Johnson before Hall’s long range rebound went over. Johnson was denied again when she wriggled through the defence into the box before Davey’s strong tackle.
The visitors managed to make it three before the halftime whistle when Payne’s powerful volley was met from a corner which was unstoppable for Delamont.
The second half saw bold defending from the Seals as Davey produced a goal stopping block from Hall’s effort, a well alerted Zoe Allen Thomas denied Brighton with a headed clearance off the line, and captain Sophia Polling blocked Rubie Harris’ powerful effort.
To compliment the ruthless defending from the Selsey backline, Delamont met these standards as she had done all game with strong hands to deny Johnson’s attempt and Hall’s close-range shot.
In the final 20 minutes it was the visitors who came out on top when Hall got a foot to substitute, Grace McEwen’s cross, and Hall’s hattrick was accomplished when she scored from the spot to beat Delamont who dived the right way from a penalty that she won.
The Seals look to bounce back this Sunday against Bromley Ladies at the Seal Bay Stadium.
