Jamie Simpson’s penalty and Matt Horsefield’s late strike was not enough for the under 18s against Arundel in a lively cup match.

Selsey last faced Arundel just under a month ago which featured 4 goals in a 2-
2 league game. This time in the Dennis Probee Cup, the opening 11 minutes
saw three goals at the Seal Bay Stadium after an early Henry Breden strike took
the lead for Arundel when Alfie Lee’s pass was uncontrollable for Marcel
Tourmentin and the ball bounced to Breden who beat Lee, placing his effort in
the bottom corner.

Simpson equalised for the Blues from the spot, as he did in the previous
meeting sending Josh Bruford the wrong way, after Will Scannell was fouled by
Harry Dynan after a great run into the box.

It was another poor pass that led to Arundel taking the lead when Ty Couzens’
back pass was too weak and met Christain Stoodley who played the ball across
to Eddie Longhurst for a cool finish.

Breden came off early due to an injury and was replaced by Sammy Schofield
who made an instant impact for the visitors when his effort was cleared off the
line by Tourmentin and was also denied by Lee.

Schofield also found himself through on goal and was held off well by Ethan
Turner and his shot was blocked by Peter Blanks.

Hayden Morey caused problems for the Arundel defence with his skill and
pace, coming close when Simpson played a delightful ball over the top to
Morey but his shot was wide.

The second half saw Oscar Lee and Horsefield come on for Selsey, and in the
opening minutes Bruford produced an impressive save from Morey ‘s shot who
fired the ball in the bottom right after Nathan Mcilwain’s low cross.

It was at the other end where another great save was made by Lee who denied
substitute, Jacob Crulley, but the referee blew his whistle for Crulley’s push.
It was almost a moment of magic for Mcilwain but his overhead kick over
ended up over the bar.

Arundel’s substitutes made an impact when Crulley finished Roderick’s short
pass across goal.

Selsey had chances to get back in the game but Arundel remained strong as
Scannell’s shot was blocked by Dynan, and Simpson’s shot was saved by
Bruford after a great ball from Horsefield.

Lee denied the visitors a fourth and Crulley a second when he stopped
Crulley’s effort with a strong leg before Kelly blocked Mcilawin’s strike before
he put the rebound over the bar in an end-to-end game.

In the final minutes Horsefield got a goal back for the Blues with a great strike
from Ty Cozens’ short pass, but it was too late for Selsey to take anything from
a fiery game.

The Blues now focus on the league where they next face Bognor at home on
Sunday 8th October at 11am.
